Breathalyzers in France

This is 3rd hand information .. you know the usual friend of a friend scenario.  So the story goes , a chap driving home through France was stopped for a spot check breathalyzer test. He hadn't been drinking & is a teetotaller but he incurred a spot fine. Reason
for the fine, his breathalyzer test kit which he carried as required was out of date & had expired months before !  So I am now wondering if there is any truth in this story,  as after checking out ours in the caravan.  they too are out of date by 14 months.  I
am wondering if the caravan club are aware of this or if anyone else has had a similar experience ?  ( If this post is in the wrong place please feel free to move it. )
