Touring New Zealand

We are thinking of touring New Zealand early next year hiring a motorhome & visiting both islands. Any advise, which company to fly with, hire company for motorhome & general advise would be appreciated. We have looked at the Tour organized through the CC
but this seems too 'organised' & restrictive on time for us. We would like to be more free & easy.
