Thought of you this morning Rocky, Alfie and me were out at seven and found the same as you....wonderland. Alfie was as mad as a young pup, even rolling in the frost, he also kept turning round and sniffing his paw prints behind him, as if to say why are they there? Then he'd snort and turn again before tearing off at full pelt through the long grass, leaving a trail of frost floating behind him. I forget, he's still a pup really. Only a short walk as he was meeting a new walking friend later in the morning. A good to be alive morning......

My pleasure BT👍🏻. It just doesn’t change over the years, Dogs seem to get a kick from the frost & snow regardless of age-that in turn gives us a kick sharing their joy

The picture is one of my old boys from about 10 years ago. He must have been about 14 at the time, was on Heart tablets and had quite bad Arthritis. We took him out in the snow and it was as if someone given him a boost of some sort. Such happy memories

He was BT, Handed in to Battersea Dogs Home as a stray and had been very badly treated. Thought to be aged 4 ish at the time, it took us a year to win his confidence and based on his estimated age he lived until he was 17. He was a very special dog to us and we still miss him now

MTD, If you let dogs into your heart, then they all leave a special mark on you when they sadly depart.
Even though we have had Alfie since he was a pup and we love him to bits, I still have a place in my memory and heart, for the three dogs I've had previous to Alfie, Two Alsations and one Lab/Doberman x. I even hear them when certain noises occur. Unless you have or have had a faithful friend, then those who haven't will not understand what I mean.
I can see that you have the patience and understanding needed to win a dogs devotion
The bond you make with your four legged pal becomes strong and dependable, it's a gift given by you and given to you in return, based on trust and understanding.....

All my boy's have been from rescue centers over the years (7 so far) Here's a picture of our old boy and young one we have had for 8 years and 2 years respectively.

I dropped a log load off earlier, just Young un & me, Young uns Mum wasn’t interested. I rattled my keys & said “Truck” Young un scooted out But Mum just yawned & laid back down in the crate, She is so lazy. I tipped & stacked the logs whilst being supervised by Young un, I’ve never been able to get Her interested in the ‘excitement’ of Log stacking, although She will collect a sliver of wood, lay down & chew it. After we’d finished the Lady who I’d delivered to asked us in for home made bread & plum jam. The kitchen had that addictive aroma of new out of the oven bread. She makes it on an old farmhouse range powered by logs. She gave me 2 doorsteps & Young un got one. I sat on the 10 seater table with a pint mug of tea, Young un picked up Her doorstep & laid in front of the range to eat Hers, much to the delight of the Lady(thankfully) I did originally stress at Young un’s manners but all was well. I was given the rest of the loaf so Young un’s Mum will get some. After giving my thanks I made a date to return to fix some broken lats on the side of the Log store, I have some spare tannilised boards, it seemed a good barter for the breakfast. Farmers wives do know how to look after folk.
We stopped off at the beach for a quick walk to let Young un have a run & me scout around for any washed up interesting pieces of wood. I found one that I could see a Shark or Crocodile shape in it. A good morning. Enjoy your day.0 -

We got our first dog a jrt 12 1/2 years ago from the blue cross he fitted into our family like a glove, unfortunately he got doggy dementia 12 months ago not the same dog but still our special boy, last Thursday we took him to the vets as he had gone down hill so much over the past couple of months getting stressed at anything frightened and then started toileting in the house. He didn’t know where he was 1/2 of the time and the other 1/2 he was sleeping. We did the best thing for him and had him put to sleep omg how hard that was, he really touched our hearts and was so very special. Although devastating we are also pleased he is now at peace.
His favorite place was gwithian sand dunes chasing rabbits so will be scattering his ashes on the dunes so he can chase rabbits forever

KevinH how heartbreaking. Thoughts and prayers are with you. Be grateful you were allowed to choose for him and not watch his bewilderment and struggle. It will take some time for the pain to ease but don't hold back on the memories, he was a very special part of your life 😢

Sorry to hear your sad news, It's never easy, we have been there a few times now over the years so know what you are going through. You still have the memories though and can take great comfort in giving him a second chance and a nice life when you adopted him.

Well the snow finally hit us and Alfie was like a little five year old boy, full of excitement at the prospect of walking/playing in the snow.
We have had Alfie now for precisely two years, rescuing him as a fourteen week old pup, this is only his second encounter with snow, boy does he love it.
Watching Alfie mature from a clumsy, inquisitive, ball of mischief, into a fully confident and socialised, well behaved companion has been a true labour of love, patience and understanding for us. He is supposed to be an adult, but he still has the pup in him and I wouldn't have him any other way.
Out today with Alfie and one of my Grand daughters, he loved chasing her through the snowdrifts in the fields, jumping and catching the snowballs we threw at him and snorting in disgust when he lost them in the snow. He dives into the drifts and comes out with a white nose and face, looking at us with his brow furrowed due to his ears being cocked and head angled, as if to say, come on then lets have fun. I noticed some horses further down the field, so called Alfie back and put his slip lead on, he came willingly, knowing that his fun wouldn't be put off for long. On leaving the field we had a heavy trek down a lane that was one big snow drift, it was heavy going for us, but Alfie didn't care, even though he was up to his shoulders with every step he took. The snow was up above our wellies. Seeing Alfie full of confidence and enjoying the snow with my G'daughter, gave a great feeling of fulfillment and pride, that little boy is "coming on nicely". He's not perfect, as he still gets the occasional bout of "selective hearing", but patience and calm repetitive commands wins in the end. He's "Good Enough" for me and makes our days so special at home or on the walk......Yes, I love dogs me.

Thanks for that story, BT. You built a great mental picture of Alfie playing in the snow and I can still remember our Boy’s amazement when he discovered the white stuff.

I thought it was time that this great thread was brought back to life, to make up for the somewhat adverse comments and feelings displayed about our four legged faithful friends, in other parts of this forum.
So, stay positive friends, remember, apply this training method to all of life, not just Dogs...... "Ignore the Bad, Reward the good"......It works on humans too
