The rules and regulations for reversing lights

Just picked up our caravan. Upon collection we discovered that the pin on the towbar of our car for the caravans reversing light doesn't work. The retailer advised that this shouldn't be a problem; and my reversing is rubbish anyway so its likely that I
wont be using that gear on the road and will just push to position the van on site, so off we went to my local storage yard for the winter. But I was watching the caravan finder channel last week and they were showing police spot checks during the holiday
season on caravans and trailers. My question is, will not having a working reversing light be subject to a fine if I am inspected? Thanks for your input.
