Motorway services before Portsmouth port?

Can anyone recomment a particular services area prior to Portsmouth? I may be travelling in the evening and need a place to stay for less than a couple of hours before lining up in the port? I'll be travelling from the north: A34, M3, M27.  There's not much
info on my map....

I think you may be better posting this in the UK section, or a moderator will be able to move it, last time I looked on a map, Portsmouth was definitely in Britain Winking

Can't help you with an answer though, sorry.

I, obviously, know this - but I'm hoping to target seasoned travellers who leave to go OVERSEAS via Portsmouth. This is a crossover info dilemma. Surely, you can't be unaware of this?

There is no space at Portsmouth port to park up so find a stop before you get there.  There is a 'services' on the A34 south of Newbury can't remember exactly where but a Little Chef I think; also a large services at A34/M4 junction.  When you reach M27
you are almost at Portsmouth.  Just a caution sounds as though you will be arriving at the busy period so give yourselves plenty of time before you get to the busy south, you may not need to stop en route!  The A34 is notorious for delays/accidents and Oxford
to Portsmouth can take a long time at busy periods so maybe the Litttle Chef should be your aim rather than the A34/M4 services.

Great info. Does the A34 'service' have room for caravans?

notwithstanding Comeyras' post, (where this obviously depends on the timing of other ferry traffic) if its only for a couple of hours, why not go directly to the port, they have a parking area there, a few lanes adjacent to the cafe.......weve used it to sleep overnight prior to a morning sailing....£5 i think, from memory...

Yes there is space for caravans.  BB stand corrected; but I am fairly local to Portsmouth and can time my arrival to a few minutes so don't need to park up there, it always looks busy to me.

See there is a 2.2m height restriction for the parking!  My caravan is 2.58M.

On your other thread I mentioned Port Solent Marina.  We've only been there in the winter, and although fairly busy on the Sunday we were there last December there was plenty of parking, particularly if you go later in the evening.  Free as well and you
can walk the dog, get a bite to eat etc.  No height restriction as I remember, but we're almost 3m so you'd be ok. Then it's only 10 mins to the ferry.

You can tell it's raining today!  If you google ' services on A34' you'll find all you need.  See no caravans on street view!

Port Solent entails coming off the M/way although it's relatively straightforward. Port Solent does have a couple of vicious speed humps though. Last services towards the port are Rownhams just outside Southampton, which has no dedicated caravan places and
is to the west of where the A34/M3 joins the M27 anyway.

There is a layby on the slip road down into Fareham Central (J11) where you could, HGVs permitting, pull over for an hour or so and then just round the roundabout at the bottom and come back up on to the M/way. Have a zoom in on Google Earth.  Not exactly
a peaceful spot though. Just go on down to Flathouse and park at the port.

It might depend on how close to the port you wish to be. At the end of the Newbury bypass is Tot Hill Services which is quite small but it does have some parking which is good for a couple of hours by the fuel station. Don't be tempted to go on the MacD side as its difficult to get out of there with a car!!! A bit further south is Sutton Scotney Services where you can park with the lorries. More noise but there is usually plenty of room.

We stop at Sutton Scotney services on the A34 south of Newbury. From there Portsmouth is about 45 minutes drive. Parking with caravan is easy as there is a very big HGV park that you can use. It has all the facilities and a Little Chef (or equivalent). It
is handy for stopping to kill time on the way to the ferry.

Sutton Scotney Services are good just north of Winchester but beware queue`s which can form in the afternoon and evening on the A34 just south of these services to the M3. Traffic can be slow on the M3 to Southampton and M27 to Portsmouth. Usually OK after
    around 1900.

Like others we often have a break at Sutton Scotney if we're running early for our preferred afternoon ferry.

Fabulous info everybody.  I now have my journey planned to the nth degree with timings postcodes, stops and sleeping place.  I have even factored a visit to the Portsmouth Tesco to get petrol....I can rest easy now.....

There is no dedicated area for caravans there, but I have managed the few times I have stopped there. It's never been overly busy when I have stopped there in the past.

I spent the night at the Port itself in early April - and in fact was offered a place on a ferry about to depart - but decided against it as I wasn't organised enough with pjs and dogs etc!

When heading for Portsmouth from the North West we always stop at Sutton Scotney services on the A34. Good stop, plenty of room for 'van, fill up with fuel if needs be and about 40 miles from ferry.

There is a tesco superstore as you leave the M27 slip to the port keep to the left lane and follow the port Solent signs turn left at first set of lights and it is on your left adjacent to the motorway I am sure you could hang around there the car par is
very large and easy acces to the petrol station . Chris

Therre's a drive through McDonalds that's opened between the petrol station part and the traffic lights at the junction. Looks a bit of a wriggle for access, so don't try it with a caravan. Come to think of it, don't try it if you value your digestive system.
There's also a sunken drain cover as you drive in from the traffic lights along Clement Atlee Way, so mind your suspension.

Always thought it a shame when they stopped you from staying on the dedicated caravan overnight area at Sutton Scotney. Stayed there a few times but now it's just a tea break.
