There have been a lot of posts about the cost of caravanning, and how expensive it can be, so I thought I'd just do some rough calculations. I was convinced that caravanning was cheaper for us, so here's how it stacks up so far...

Year 1: (April to April)

Caravan + full awning £2300

Trade up to bigger Landrover £2400 (oops, bought a really heavy caravan!)

Storage £320

Club membership £40

Insurance £60

Site fees c. £700

Total: £5820

Nights away: 40

Price per night (excluding food and diesel): £145.50

Year 2:

Porch awning £200

Storage £340

Club membership £50

Insurance £80

Site fees c. £600 (so far, only part way through the year)

Total: £1270

Nights away (so far): 25

Price per night: £50.80

We can only holiday at weekends or school hols, so used to spend £400 - £600 per week at high season on a holiday cottage and between £6 and £15 per night camping. Overall total spent in year 2 is probably similar to the amount we used to spend per annum
on holidays, but we find with the caravan we go away a lot more often.

I think we shall try and make use of more CLs rather than club sites to reduce costs further and if we keep this caravan for another season as we plan to do, we really will have saved money overall.

Not as cheap as I expected, but still good value and so, so enjoyable.
