- So many campers came and went the next day– what a shame - they missed a real treat. We came, saw and stayed for almost half of our three week holiday. A tranquil setting, in the estate of
an old château, with all the basic amenities provided, for 15 odd Euros per night - and all provided by the local community. - There are 26 large grass pitches and two rent-able cabins (18 Euros including electricity) that sleep four. All pitches have 10amp electricity – and what's more, no reverse polarity here!
- Heady aromas of honeysuckle within the separating beech hedges waft all day long.
- All pitches have some view of the small lake (l'etang) which, although it takes just 15 minutes to amble around, is quite picturesque and very popular with local fishermen.
- This is the only site I have been on that checks your pet's health certificate on arrival – a very useful regulation to have when it comes to turning away some less than desirable visitors!
- It is very well looked after with grass cutting every week and sanitary facilities cleaned thoroughly at least once a day. Constant hot water for washing, dishwashing and laundry is provided.
There are three toilets (take your own loo roll!), two urinals, four basin cubicles, three showers, three diswashing sinks, two laundry sinks and two other sinks for general use. Basic, but effective recycling is available at the back of the toilet block,
which includes food waste. - There are excellent facilities for disabled visitors- an easy ramp to the toilet block where a large toilet and shower, all renovated in 2014, are provided plus the bonus of an easy access path
around the lake. - At the rear of the toilet block is a set of stone stairs which lead to a small but pretty elevated meadow/orchard. Perfect for children's play or dog exercise. Bird visitors included chaffinches
(very tame), wrens, blackcaps, thrushes, robins, blackbirds, sparrows, not to mention the obligatory crows and pigeons. On the lake were mallards and grebe, regularly seen being dive-bombed by swifts scooping up the insects above the surface. - Weekends are a little busier as the lake is a popular spot for locals to play Petang, have picnics and play in the small children's playground at the opposite end. However we found their visits
non-intrusive and the place was left immaculate afterwards – not one piece of litter to be seen!. - The village – literally beside the site - is quiet but has at least two (that we found) excellent boulangerie/pattiseries that open at 7am, taking it in turn to close for various days in the
week. Also a pharmacie and a few restaurants, including a pizzerie and a creperie. - On Thursday morning is the local market – all of 5 minutes walk from the site – which bustles with four butchers vans, a few greengrocers and many local artisans, including wood carving and basket
weaving. - There is a Carrefour supermarket one kilometre away and a Super U (large) in Liffre- follow the signs to Centre Ville.
- Just outside the site is a large sign with a map describing a scenic drive around the area, where many battles took place in medieval times. The ruins of a castle are at the far end of the lake,
which you can walk around. - Also there are three waymarked and colour coded walks, suitable for all abilities and great for dog walking when it is too hot in the sunshine. They take you around the lake and into the woods.
The blue one includes some short climbs in 'le foret' which has some beautiful rock formations. VTT, or cycling routes are also available. - There is no swimming allowed in the lake. There is a swimming pool in Liffre, 10 km away.
- The local vet is 10 minutes walk from the site and they do speak a little English. They were very caring with my nervous Jack Russell and it cost 45 Euros to have her treated for return to the
UK. - Warning – do not come here if you are averse to church bells. St Aubin has two churches which seem to have some rivalry over who can chime out the most!. They start with a 7 o'clock wake up call,
a snooze button then comes on in 10 minutes, then every half-hour and hour till 8pm. At least they don't carry on through the night. But after a few days, we hardly noticed them. - This site is beautiful, peaceful and one that is wasted as a one-night-stand.
- In the 2015 CC France directory - do not use the mobile phone given - it is incorrect.
