pets on Hull to Zeebrugge ferry crossing

Taking our dog on this route summer 2013 for first time. Been infomed by P&O that he has to go in a dog cage for the 14hrs Of the trip. We are not allowed access and the dog remains in the cage for the duration of the crossing. Has anyone had experience
of this? Should we be worried?
