Traveling through Switzerland

I am traveling to Verbania on Lake Maggiore in Italy in late May for the first time towing a caravan and am reluctant to pay the Swiss vignette for both the car and the caravan. As I am not in any rush can anyone advise on a route through Switzerland that
will avoid using motorways. My travel plans are flexible and am likely to travel down through western Germany or eastern France to Basel. I am also thinking at present of using the Simplon Pass.
