What is this drink from Exeter?

I have a Spanish friend who used to stay in the Exeter area with a family during the school holidays, which was about 25 years ago now. He recalls being offered a taste of a dark brown drink which he said tasted of peaches and was alcoholic based. He said
it was not schnapps but was keen to learn what it was. Does anyone have any idea at all, perhaps it was very local? Regards, Roy
