Touring in USA

We are hoping to visit USA next year - we did the West coast prior to children and hired a car and just drove where we wanted

next year we will be taking our daughters and hoping to do East side.  We are discussing whether to hire motor home and wondered what the places are like to stop overnight. places we hope to visit include Niagra and Cape Cod,

has anyone done this, any advice gratefully received
