Payload upgrade

I’ve not upgraded the rating of my vehicle but am curious about what is involved.

I’ve been told that it’s “just” a paperwork exercise. If so, what does the paperwork achieve? I’m thinking that, if my vehicle is safe carrying 350kg more load, why shouldn’t I simply carry that much more?

If anyone has gone through the process, could they enlighten me?
