When we went away for September I had a few mishaps, We stayed at Richmond, Whitley Bay, Berwick on Tweed, North Berwick on Tweed, elrose and Newcasttleton. We had a superb holiday but ..................

The damage to the caravan happened the first day of our holidays. We were siteing the caravan on the CC site at Richmond. We drove past a pitch and then decided to use it. As the caravan was on level roadway and the car
was down a slope I could not see the bottom 2 foot or so of the caravan by the wheel. In reversing onto the pitch I could see a dividing hedge that I was reversing sound but not a red box containing firefighting extinguishers. The side of the van pushed it
over initially with very little damage, just a small pea sized very shallow bruise. However it was shortly after this as the car leveled up that I realised I had knocked something over and so I pulled off and pitched elsewhere. When I walked back it was evident
that although (thankfully) the box went over easily it was held by a steel hawser through the base. The box then damaged the 4 inch fairing panel beneath the caravan. I borrowed a drill bit, drilled the fairing and wired it in place. Could have been worse!

Funnier was the expensive egg custard - that wasn't a custard! About half way through the holiday we had been out in the morning and were heading back to the site at about 3pm. I fancied an egg custard and none were to be
had and so we drove out to a nearby village. I parked up on the side of the road and went off in search whilst Fliss was looking in a shop. Found some expensive cheesecake in a patisserie and bought two slices for £5.60 :)

On the way back to the car, after admiring a classic 650 Kawasaki motorcycle and looking in a shop with Fliss we got into the car to drive off. Just then a delivery wagon pulled up and double parked just in front of me.
I reversed about 6 foot and then thought 'there was a motorcycle parked 10 feet behind and so I'll just go another foot and that will do' ...................... 'Oh dear! I know what that noise is!!'

I had pushed the 650 Kawasaki off its side stand. I walked to the back of the car and two lads emerged from a nearby cafe. One was not best pleased :-). I convinced him to walk around the block whilst he regained his composure
and to leave his mate with me to make sure I didn't do a runner. I got him to phone a local dealer and get the price and availability of parts after telling him to check carefully for all damage. The parts came to less than £40. I gave him the contents of
my wallet (£75) and we shook on the deal. We all parted on good terms. That was when my eye was OK????? Hence the expensive egg custards that weren't custards. Over £40 each!

On the Saturday morning In Newcastleton before our intended return home on Sunday I woke up and rapidly realised that I had lost most of the sight in my right eye. Effectively I have lost the sight as the remaining
vision is well above my focal point. After a couple of appointments at the hospital I am told that 'this is probably as good as it gets' - my words.

There is no effective treatment and the chances of it reoccurring in my 'good' eye are around 30%. The consultant admitted that he had not looked at the latest papers for a while and that was from memory.

The vision in my left eye now needs correction as it was (ain't life a bitch) my weakest eye. Waiting for glasses now but, for the time being, 1.5 strength readers are useful for general use. 2.5 for reading.

I am not doing much driving but I am able to read a number plate at the required distance with 1.5 readers in good light and so have driven the mile to local shops etc. Hope that glasses this week will improve matters.
