We have recently brought a new caravan. Its a 2008 swift coastline 540, single axle four berth. MTPLM 1472kg. (MRO of 1265kg + Pay load of 207kg).

As a family we are incredibly excited and can't wait to get cracking.

I drive a company car and thought we'd replace the wifes car with a suitable tow car. Our initial thoughts were either a 2012 CRV 2.2diesel manual or a Jeep Compass 2.2 diesel manual.

What I find rather odd is as follows.. The braked towing capacity on both are 2000kg.

But the kerbwight for the honda is 1713kg and the Jeep 1605kg

Both have a towing limit for a braked trailor of 2000kg. Yet neither meet the accpeted 85% ratio.

This is not a huge caravan yet we are really struggling to find a tow car, without resorting to a much bigger car. Surely a caravan with over 500kg spare towing capacity, or 25% less than the towing limit would be fine given most if not all situations? Otherwise
whats the point in this limit??

Any help or advice would be much appreciated.
