Wild/free camping in Europe

We would like to do some wild camping around Europe and wondered if any of you have some places that you could recommend.  We have a caravan but have found many places for motorhomes only.  Not sure, especially in France, why they do not realise that a caravan can be just as self seficient as a motorhome.
