Ferry V Tunnel

Advice please. I am well used to the various ferry routes, but have never used the tunnel with a van on. How easy is it accessing the carriages with an 8 metre twin axle van.Presumably there are special carriages for 'vans - or do they stick you in with
the HGV's in those open cages?
