Swiss motorway vignette.

Is it possible to purchase a Swiss motorway vignette at the boarder or at a service station just prior, as you can for Austria, Slovenia, etc?

On major roads at major border crossings - yes. But if you are an adventurous motor home driver and going into the country on a minor road over the mountains - then maybe not.

Yes simple to do on that route, big pull in at border. The route you mention gives great views of the mountains as you drive down. Enjoy the trip .

You must check your max weight first as if you are over 3.5t then you cannot travel using a vignette. You will need to buy from the customs/tax people a heavy vehicle tax to be able to use ANY of the roads, not just the motorways. Regards, Roy

Unless things have changed at Basel, you will be invited to pay as you reach the frontier and they will stick the vignette inside your windscreen. If you want to pay by credit card they direct you to park near the office (toilets available) and you stick
    it on yourself.

If there happens to be a long queue of lorries in the nearside lane, just overtake as they have a different entry point.

As Hitch says you can pay with cash so having enough Euros is best tip I can give as it saves having to pull in and park, which can be tricky if it is busy, more so if towing as we do.

Last time they stuck the vignette on the windscreen and handed us the one for the van which we fitted later.

If you pay by credit card choose Swiss Francs not English pounds otherwise you will get a local conversion rate that might be poor. If you select Euros you could end up with a double conversion. Same advice anywhere of course.

Best to pay at the motorway service station just before the border. More room to park, no queues then just drive through at the border.

this year we will be transitting switzerland from Annecy in France to Colmar so will be crossing border near Geneva. has anyone crossed in this direction and where is best place to purchase vignette.

secondly, answer to this may be obvious but is the vignette sticker for the caravan stuck inside caravan window or inside car windscreen adjacent to car sticker?. or, do they issue a special car sticker which covers the caravan as well as the car (at the
    double charge rate).

We get our vignettes though the Swiss travel service by post, it cost about 3 quid extra for postage.

You need one for your car and one for your van, we've always put the caravan one in the front nearside window of the van.

We've currently got 5 stuck there from previous holidays, it quite a talking point when we're on British sites.

Or just like other major border crossings you can buy at the Geneva border point, or from petrol stations on the French side of the border. Two vignettes  - front left windscreen of car and front left window of caravan . The man will probably do it for you.

We always bought one off Ebay before we went, there is usually a few pounds to be saved and saves queing for one.

When we got back we re-sold it.

Theres a couple on Ebay now.......

Back in the day before computers we used a product called Letratone to render architectural drawings, the boss thought it was the devil's work and insisted on ink wash but the stuff became popular. It was a bit like semi rigid cling film and came in 57 tones
from clear to black. If you stuck clear Letratone to your windscreen then stuck the vignette to the tone you could peel it off and pass it on to your mates. The Swizz twigged this and made it a specific offence.

To answer an earlier question, you buy two identical vignettes; one goes inside the car windscreen, the other inside the caravan front window.

I was always nervous about damaging the acrylic so we put a very thin film of Vaseline on the vignette. If you do this it will come away in one piece and in theory can be resold (hence the eBay offers), however, as stated above the Swiss got wise to this and made it illegal to put any substance on the vignette. This is publicised at the border.

When this subject came up on a thread a couple of years back it was stated that it is not illegal to sell secondhand vignettes but it is illegal to buy them. It was also stated that you can buy used ones at the German services coming out of Basel but I cannot verify either of these statements.

I don't resent paying. The motorways and tunnels are amazing.

I've bought mine (for van and car) but looking at them unpeeled it looks as though the bit you read, or whatever, will only be visible from inside the vehicle. Is there also info on the sticky side which is then visible from outside.......doh......

The bit visible from the outside looks like the motorway symbol with a number - 16 - for this year.
