Caen to Royan - Route & Overnight Stop

Hello all. We are going to Royan this August. ViaMichelin throws up a few routes to get there from the Caen ferry.....has anyone done this and able to recommend a route? Also ferry gets in at 15:30....wanted to knock a bit off the journey so could do an
hour or two off the ferry, can anyone recommend a quick overnight stop en route....Many thanks in advance, Roger.
