Security of Camp Sites

Hi

My wife and I are shortly travelling in our MH to France and wondered if anyone  has had any problems with thefts at the camp sites?

We are not taking our awning so would be leaving our chairs, Weber BBQ outside if we were away for the day.

Well if out for the day in the MH I would not leave anything on the pitch either in here or abroad.

Generally we have found the sites to be as secure or more  in France, obviously if you stay on Aires then you have to look at the area etc. and decide youself if you feel safe.

Never had a single problem over 15 years or so and we leave many things outside. If not taking the bikes we do fit a simple lock however.

As you have a Motorhome I assume you are going out for the day in it, in which case I would not leave anything in its own little pile on its lonesome on an empty pitch. If you mean leaving the M/H on site then its a different matter but costly items I would not.

Never had a problem myself although I'm still a youngster in Euro travelling and security abroad is good, plus never felt any unease with other campers.

Only one incident in many years of euro touring. A well known site in Sarlat during the main holiday period.

A guy and his mate tried to steal my barbie. Both experienced a 4 cell maglight where it really hurts a chap and I got my barbie back.

Told reception the following morning and they were uninterested so we left before the guys grew some more and came looking for me.Surprised

Never had a problem in the last fifteen years of going to the South of France on the campsite. Site has CCTV and code entry gate so reasonably secure. The nearest we came to a problem was with the car parked on the front at Frejus around 1999 came back to
see a young man trying all the door handle of parked cars including ours. Personally I would`nt leave a Motorhome parked in the South of France when out for the day.

We have never had a problem in France. I would not worry any more than over here.

We never had a problem until on a municipal site in Fabrezan last year, when our caravan was entered and lots of stuff stolen, including loungers, the awning canvas but not the poles, the hoover but not the tools.  It was the one night we'd left the caravan
unattended during a two week stay there whilst visiting our house nearby.

Staying on sites this year, we haven't worried and leave all our stuff outside, as usual.  We haven't become paranoid as a result and generally French campsites see to suffer little from thefts by other campers.

We have a MH too, but never use it when on site.  Not sure if you are planning to go out in the MH from your post.  We go cycling a lot, and leave the awning out, table and chairs out and that's it; apart from towels on a line and possibly some washing.
Never had a problem with theft in 12 years of MHing in France twice a year for 6-7 weeks at a time.

However, if you go out in the MH then I wouldn't leave anything on an empty pitch either, but saying that, I've seen plenty who do just that.

We do have good locks for the bikes, usually leave them under the awning overnight, well secured,, straight underneath the window where we sleep.

Agree with DD. You can easily get paranoid about these things to the point it spoils your holiday.

It's rare, so rare that providing you use common sense and have a tuned "antenna"  you are unlikely to be turned over.

It is however perhaps a good plan not to take on holiday anything that could not be replaced albeit at a cost.
