Camp site near Angouleme
My wife and I are considering stopping off to visit Angouleme on our way down to the South West. We did a one night stop there in 1988 and have always wanted to return to see more. Can anyone recommend a good site within reach? We almost always use ACSI.

There is a campsite on the outskirts of Angouleme called Campsite du Plan d'eau. Its not in the ACSI scheme but only costs about £12 a night so there would be little advantage price wise. There are three sites within 30kms in the ACSI book:-
Campsite Marco de Bignac
Castel Camping Les Gorges du Chambon
Le Réjallant

The site on the north edge of the city is called Camping du Plan d'Eau, probably because it's near a lake.
The website says they charge 15.75 euros a night but I've no idea whether it's on the ACSI list or not. I don't have a book
Edit. Sorry DK - you type more quickly than I do.

Last couple of times down that way we have used the municiple at Baignes St Radegonde. This is a typical french municiple, clean and tidy and a very reasonable price. Its about 30-45 mins past Angouleme on the N10

I have stayed at the municiple at Montignac Charente, a small village on the Charente just to the north of Angouleme. There is a bus service into Angouleme from there but I did not use it so no idea how frequent it is. It is a very peaceful pleasant site.
