Overnight stops in Normandy & Charente

Hi, I'm travelling to France in August 2015 making my way to the Bordeaux area. I am looking to make two overnight stops on the way down from Cherbourg. The first being in Normandy and the second In the South Vendee/Charente area. Has anybody got any recommendations?
