Ferry trials.
We were just over a week into our six week tour of Southern france when we had the news that my sister in law, who had been ill for some time, had taken a turn for the worse and the siutation was critical. We made the obvious decision to get back to England
as soon as we could. We assumed, wrongly as we discovered, that once we got to Cherbourg we would be able to exchange our October return crossing for an immediate one to get us home a.s.a.p. We explained to the young lady at the ferry information desk that
my sister in law was dying and that we needed to get back to England. She studied her computer screen and then requested a sum for a return booking which took no account of the fact that we had already paid for the return fare. When I questioned it I was
told that as the crossing had been booked through the Caravan Club I should have contacted them for an alteration. With hindsight I wish I had had the presence of mind to phone Red Pennant as soon as the crisis arose in order to ask for their advice. A few
days after we got home I did write to Brittany Ferries in order to express my disappointment. To give them their due they then sent a cheque in refund for what they described as a booking fee. With that deducted we were then out of pocket by around half
fo the original return fare. I decided to recount this on Club Together as a warning to others. I am still wondering how Red pennant might have advised me if only I had throught to give them a call. Having severe hearing problems I never so much of think
of using a mobile phone except in dire emergency but then this was an emergency. I wonder if others have suffered similarly at the hands of the ferry operators.
