Parking overnight at the Calais ferry port
We have always spent our final night in France in the car park at the Calais port. It means there is no mad rush for a ferry and we can get an often cheaper early morning ferry the next day. Customs have told us it's a safe area - they said they did not need to search our caravan when we said where we'd slept. BUT this year we found the car park much smaller and got the last parking spaces at about 6pm. Over two thirds of the car park has been given over to private car rental and short term paid parking. Units arriving after us that night had to find other places to park, I assume in nearby aires and tricky motorway stops. Does anyone here know if things are likely to change, because it will stop us going to Calais in future. Or does anyone know of anywhere else within an hour of driving south from Calais where we can overnight safely for free with our van?

I don't know the answer, but since your first post six years ago Calais town council have opened a new campsite in tne town only a couple of miles from the ferry terminal - it's called Camping Grand Gravelot - and they employ a night time security patrol. Staying there might be a more attractive option for you than trying to park or sleep in the port area, but one problem is that the campsite doesn't open for the 2020 season until 29 March so that won't help if you are travelling over the winter.
