We have a 2-berth and keep considering changing to a fixed bed. However, my husband is over 6 foot tall, and to be honest, yes it is a bit of hassle making the bed up, but I'd rather 5 minutes of hassle in order to have a huge bed and a decent night, as
opposed to having the convenience of a fixed bed but feel squashed and cramped all night, and then groggy in the morning. Whatever one opts for, there's always a compromise.

trust you guys slept well in the garden last night....we had a lovely time, thanks....

KG, was checking out his rev counter on the way home....closet HamiltonUndecided

Lovely to see you BB...and Mrs BB! Slept well in the garden thanks...pitch was a tad noisy with passing traffic. Unsure if we'll book there again! Laughing Funny

We've had side bed, single beds, make up beds over the years. Don't mind having to make up beds (we do that now) it gives us much more room during the day and only takes minutes to do, we tour for 11-12 weeks on the continent twice a year usually but it
doesn't bother us, they are very comfortable and not narrow, but then we have a Bailey so very wide van. When its cold in the winter we sometimes make it up as a kingsized  bed, but can't be doing with the climbing over each other. Loved the 2 fixed singles
we had in our last caravan, hated the side French bed, would never have one of those again, would rather make up beds than that type.

We changed to a fixed bed when the boys no longer came with us. It's ideal for the two of us. Would like a larger washroom but we were limited for space at home. I would have a two berth and make up the bed to getter a bigger washroom, but OH says no way
is he going back to making up beds!

Leave the front seats made up as two singles chuck throws over during the day or if in hot weather in southern Europe where we spend most of our time. we are outside the van anyway. Advantage lighter caravan and legth under 6m.

We moved to a fixed bed as we were getting tired of the evening chore of making it up and the morning one of taking it down again and stowing it away. A lot depends on what is important to you. The fixed bed makes life a lot easier but it takes up a lot
of space so like everything else you have to decide what is most important to you.

We cerainly don't want a fixed bed. We like the extra space a side dinette gives us and the large rear washroom with twin wardrobes. We are out for nearly 3/4 yr in our van and the making up of the front double has never been a problem for us. We've looked
in many fixed bed caravans but they all look cramped as far as we're concerned. If we went for another van it would be one of the 3 berth ones.

Changed our caravan to a fixed bed four months ago and love it! Really wish we'd done it sooner as we have had a 5 berth, 4 berth and 2 Berth. Huge amount of space under the bed, only an extra 100 kilos weight wise which are 4 x4 was still well in the kerbweight.
The comprise on ours is the smaller bathroom but would probably never go back to having to make beds now - much kinder on the back!

We have had fixed and none fixed over th past 20 years and for us it is without doubt a fixed bed. We do not have the feeling of being cramped as we chose the twin axle Bailey Barcelona series 2, now there is just the 2 of us with our 2 dogs who come with
us on every trip. We got fed up having to make and unmake the front double the luxury of getting into a large double made up bed after a busy day exploring is bliss.

Would never, ever go back to making up beds. Our fixed bed is wonderful and comfortable and we certainly don't miss percieved lack of daytime space that is often referred to. Behind the bed is a full width washroom too. Best layout we've had.

Quite like the idea of a fixed bed but as I am nearly  six foot it would mean the caravan would need be quite large to have a bed that will accommodate me without my feet sticking out the end.

Don't go for a transverse bed there are not long enough due to the curve at the bottom. We have a Swift Conqueror 570 side bed loads of room. Fantastic bed. No more making up bed's.

Although ours is fixed bed and was a good move, they are only for the average height amongst us. Any taller than 5' 11" then choose carefully, the majority are definitely not for 6 footers and above.

We changed to two single fixed beds last year. The concept iss  great but we do miss the kitchen space that the layout has reduced. I also find our fixed beds too narrow & I have been known to fall out, to much mirth from the DCOS.

I note that Coachman have since increased the width of the single beds!

On balance a good choice, but there are restrictions as a result!

Bailey did the same with the Unicorn Cadiz between series 2 and 3. We have the U2, have never fallen out but do sometimes wake up a bit stiff, as I don't think you turn over so much in a narrow bed. Probably sub conscious saying, I might fall out.

we have a 2005 Coachman and have never made up the double bed. It's fine as two singles and takes very little making up. I agree with many others, with fixed bed you either compromise space elsewhere or have to buy a van longer than Eddie Stobart!  One little
tip, if you're going out for the day (as we often do) leave the beds ready to crash as soon as you return. Luvvly jubbly!

Wouldn't go back to making up the beds now, the seating cushions were not giving us a good nights sleep so now have the comfort of an 8" deep mattress, perfect zzzzzzzzzzz's
Smile Yes the caravan is a little longer with reduced space but its a 4 berth used by two people so ideal for us.

We would pack up caravanning if we had to give up our fixed island bed.

i wonder why this is....must be so frustrating for taller folk.

our single beds are 2.0m long (6'6") and 80cm wide (2' 7"), some german ones are going to 90 cm wide for this season...

ive seen some uk 'doubles' which are only just over a metre..

I nelieve that our fron singles are 6' 3'' by 2' 4'' and are fine for us at 5' 6'' the new model is
    6' 4" x 2' 5"

We had a normal 4.3 metre 4 berth for 27 years while the boys grew up. Making a bed up every night was just the norm. When we retired we took it on an 8 week trip to Italy and France, we found the bed making labourious and at the first opportunity uprated
to a 7 metre caravan with a fixed bed. This has transformed our time away and restored our love for caravanning.

Ours is fine - we have a standard double bed foam mattress on it and then some  covered blocks of the original mattress at the end to fill the gap so it is a good 6 inches longer than a standard double and the same width.  Maybe it is because it is an older van (2005) and doesnt curve in the same way?

I was very anti fixed beds for years due to the loss of space. However following back problems we went to a fixed double which is much more comfortable with a proper mattress rather than the seat cushions We then found the loss of space was not the issue we had imagened as it gives a great under bed store for bulky items such as a sat dish.

I agree with earlier posts that some fixed beds are too short. This especially applies to many transverse island beds. Which leave little room to reach the loo once it has been set for sleeping. I am 6ft and find the double fixed bed running along one side wall is long enough.  As already mentioned if you are tall just check your proposed model is suitable.
