walkie-talkie for use in Europe

Hi, reading another motorhomer book, the couple travelling abroad are using walkie-talkies to communicate with each other whilst out and about on sites, wife going off to check out pitches then directing huby where to go etc.

Seems like they could be useful saving mobile phone usage as anyone ever done this? Or any downsides before I go off searching for some?
