Campervan hire and insurance in New Zealnd

Hi. Does anyone have any experience of campervan hire in New Zealand, relating to insurance. We've booked a campervan (and trip) with Travelbag but were shocked about the cost per day of insuring for recovery in case of breakdown or accident. Is it possible
to arrange such insurance independently?
