1st timers heading to Konstance

We are heading to Lake Konstance in Germany via Calais with our dog on 1st July for 3 weeks.  We'd like to stay for 8 to 10 days in Konstance but I'm finding that chosing stops along route a bit tricky. We only want to travel 2 to 3 hours from Calais at
the start of the trip and I'd like to stay a couple of nights in Freiburg.  Don't mind tolls.  We do like to be within walking distance of a town or village.  Any advice or experienced tips would be very welcome.  Thank you in advance.
