Reversing with skoda superb

Hi - I am a newbie to caravanning having had motorhomes for some years. I have bought a 2010 Skoda superb 2.0D estate 170bhp 4x4 and a 2008 Bailey Senator series 6 Wyoming (twin axle). I appreciate this van is on the max(~1600kg) for what I should be expecting
to tow with this car- MTPLM about 70kg over 100% of the car's kerbweight. But it feels stable on the road and the max recommended towing weight of the skoda is 2000kg. The problem is when I try to reverse. We have a long driveway to negotiate to get the van
upto our house and when I try to reverse the van up the clutch starts to smell awful and the position of the clutch pedal has dropped downwards then after a few minutes comes back up to the normal position. The clutch is not slipping when towing or driving
normally. Is this to be expected with a van of this weight and this car? I plan to get movers for the van but any advice/experience appreciated

Many Thanks

Alastair
