getting through rouen

can anyone help, we are first time abroad caravaners, and last year while going to La Rochelle, we got into a terrific messin Rouen, because of city works.with the van at the back, we were in a terrible mess due to bad deviations, my question is, a) are
the works finished?. b) is there a better way to La Rochelle without going through Rouen from Calais? Any help would be appreciated.
