Pitching at Portsmouth for the 8 am to Caen?

Has anyone spent the night on the docks at Portsmouth waiting for the 8 am ferry to Caen?  I am hoping to take that route in a few days - and I have stayed at Plymouth docks the night before - I am hoping Portsmouth is the same?  Thank you for any help or
suggestions of where to stay.

    Yes you can overnight at the port,  but there are evening ferries to St Malo at 2015 , to Caen at 2245 and to Le Havre at 2315. If you arrive after those have left it's less congested at the port.
