Most economical way to South of France

I guess we are still classed as newbies at this but we are trying to decide best  and most economical way to get to the south of France.  Do we sail from Dover as we have previously or cut some driving off and go from Portsmouth to Le Havre we have a caravan
and dog !  Also what are these camping chqs we have read about ?
