Motorcaravanning in Eastern Europe

Hi,

My wife and I are in the preliminary stages of planning a trip to Eastern Europe in our new-to-us campervan.  We'd like to visit Poland and, possibly, the Baltic Republics.  We'd like to go during the summer.

Obviously, it's a long way to drive, especially as the opportunity to take a ferry to Hamburg seems to be no longer available.  I don't think there are any autotrains heading east.

My question is, can any of you offer any advice for such a trip?

Peter

We went to the Baltic coast in 2011 and travelled almost to the Polish border. I wrote a
blog here which might help. It is a lovely part of Germany and what fascinated me the most were new houses being built with thatched roofs!!!

I was going to say that some of the back roads in "Eastern Europe" are not the best but I think that of some of our local roads. Seriously though we found the major routes to be fine, particularly as some EU money has been ploughed into these new joiners
but some older out of the way roads can be testing for want of a better word.

Sites near main towns are generally ok, but take 2 and 3 pin adapters and not all have CEE plugs as standard. You may have to share a communal shower if you don't use your own. We tend to think more along the lines of CLs if the site is not up to CC standard
but don't mind that as we use CLs a lot anyway. Generally though we've been welcolmed wherever we've been and I'm sure you'll enjoy it.

Deleted User User's post is pertinent though as I'm only talking late spring months and timing and location may make all the difference.

You should get a better response if you detail when are you going, how long for and where are you located in relation to the ports,

Thank you David.  Unfortunately, we don't know yet where we wish to visit - Warsaw, Gdansk perhaps?  The real objective of my query is how best to get there.  We'll be starting from near Cambridge.  Harwich is the nearest obvious ferry port but there might be better options that we haven't considered - yet!

    Thanks

    Peter

Harwich/Hook with Tesco vouchers if we are going east...our most used direction.

It's generally the same as Western Europe except 2 or 3 or even 4 or 5.days have to be allowed for travelling time each way.....but you need to know where you are going first.WinkingLaughing

Harwich to Hook should certainly be your starting point then either head across towards Berlin and up through Poland that way or head to Dortmund and up to the Baltic coast and along towards Rostock joining Poland at Szcezin. We tend to drive a maximum of
200 -250 miles or so a day and it would take us about 3 days to get to the Polish border but you could do it in 2 if you have a co-driver or prepared to drive further each day using the autobahns.
