Bay of Biscay or Channel crossing this weekend?

I am travelling to southern Spain this weekend (or as soon as I can get a booking) for 7 weeks with my husband who has Alzheimer's (no pressure)!

Should I chance a rough ride to Bilbao or take the long drive by land? Would really appreciate the benefit of your experiences.
