Touring in new Zealand

We are planning a 2 month trip to New Zealand in February 2013 and would like to tour by campervan. Has anyone done this or have any information, tips etc. So far we have looked at various hire places and the going rate for 2 months hire ranges form £3500
to £8,000. We are considering a 4 berth to give us extra space but wondering if this necessary as such a difference in price.
