A Fishy Problem!!

I'm looking for some information. We were walking today, near Huntingdon, beside a small clear stream, about 3ft wide and 6" deep, and saw a shoal of fish which I couldn't identify. They were between 6" and 1ft long, quite sleek in shape, overall greyish in colour, but a few had brick red tips to their lower (pectoral?) fins and tail. There were also a couple of smaller ones in the shoal that had dark stripes across their bodies. Can any angler please tell me what type of fish they were? Sorry no photo.
