Lower àwning rail

Hello everyone. I have a 2006 Ace Award. And at some stage it has had a nearside body repair.Upon trying to fit my new full àwning, I discovered that the lower àwning rail has no entry flares to accept the draught skirt. I assume that the rail was replaced
at the time of repair and a length of rail without the wider entry flares substituted. Has anyone tried to rectify this by prizing the sides of the rail apart with a bladed implementation as a chisel ? Is this worth a try or am I likely to split the alloy
extrusion?
