A mate of mine had a touring caravan that he kept on a site permanently. He sold it last year as he wasn't going to use it as much.

He's just ordered a BMW 1 series and he mentioned to me "I think we shot ourselves in the foot selling the caravan. We could have used it for touring with this new car. It's a 1.6 litre so would have pulled it easily".

I looked up the kerb weight of this car and it's 1360kg, so the 85% weight would be 1160kg.

Not many caravans are that light these days, and certainly the one he had was no-where near that light (probably over 1400kg).

This brought home to me how little research people do when buying a car / caravan and just assume everything will be ok.

Explains some of the tow cars we see on sites that cannot possibly be up to doing the job safely.
