Running ones engine!!

Can anyone please explain why certain M/H's sit with their engines running for minutes on end before setting off. Today one M/H opposite our pitch ran his engine for over 15mins before switching off, taking out his EHU cable and then starting again and driving
off a couple of minutes later. All that pollution!!
