Lake Garda
can anyone recommend ACSI sites on Lake Garda and which is best, North or South.

Thats a bit of a leading question
I think it very much depends on what time of year. Lake Garda is very popular with our German chums as obviously
its a lot nearer for them. So any time during school holidays most sites will be very busy. So far we have only stayed at the Southern end of the Lake although this year we are thinking about trying the North around Riva del Garda and Torbole. Have you any
initial thoughts about where you would like to be based?David

We stayed at the Fontanelle site at Moniga deal Garda in May 2014 with our caravan. The ACSI pitches are on terraces and are good and some have lake views. The toilets/showers are fine. It's not a noisy site ie lots of activities, but there is a swimming
pool in the high season. There is a shop on site with bread and basic supplies and a really good, not expensive, restaurant overlooking the lake. We cycled along the path by the lake and then took cycle tracks to Desenzano. There is a Lidl a couple of miles
north and some nice places for sight seeing on the lake. We really liked it there.We drove round the lake and liked the south west of it the best.
We also stayed at Camping Village San Francesco just west of Sirmione (to where we cycled). This site was very different, much more a family holiday camp, very big and very noisy! Not really our scene! All the outfits were squashed in and it was very full
(end of May). Not at all like the one at Moniga. But it depends what you like, and what you want to do.0 -
Stayed at Riva Del Garda a few years ago (not with the caravan) nice lakeside town , i believe more windy than the southern parts, very popular with windsurfers as a result. There is a site called camp Bavaria if i recall correctly, handily placed but busy

We have stayed at Bardolino , Lasize and Peschiera on the south east side all of which have reasonable sites within walking distance of the small towns- these are a bit touristy but attractive imo. We also stayed at Camping Fornella on the west side which
is a good site but less accessable for towns/villages. It depends what you like, we like proximity to villages as I have mobility issues but if you take the car out or cycle there are many options. We also prefer sites with pools. As said above Lake Garda
is very popular with German people so definitely check for their school hols, unfortunately these vary from state to state. The lake ferries are good and the staff helpful. We visited Sirmione by ferry from Bardolino and there were many places that could
be reached by ferry if you have the time. The main road up the west side is quite narrow and fairly crowded -doable with care but we lost our MH mirror to a lorry coming in the opposite direction. Overall we love the area although prefer Maggiore. ACSI
have many sites around the lake.0 -
Visited most places around the lake but only stayed at Camping Bella Italia at Peschiera Del Garda. As said it is a busy area and we try to time our visits for early June when it is a little quieter BUT that is a relative term as even in mid May we have
been turned away, but always got on the next day, and you can possibly stay on the football field to wait for space.We have looked at other sites,San Francesco being one,but seen nothing to match what Bella offers in terms of position and facilities. Our first visit was in 2003 and our last was June 2015 and most of the staff are the same now as at the first visit. The
site is very big but due to the masses of tress and shrubs does not feel it and there is a reasonable mix of nationalities including the weekending Italians on seasonal pitches. We are caravaners but the site is very popular with motor homers as it would be
possible to spend a week or more and never need to drive anywhere as the site supermarket it excellent and you can walk into PDG and get a ferry to other parts of the lake,or a main line train, and there is a bus stop a the site entrance. For a first visit
it is a good choice due to the many places to see,Verona is about 20 minutes drive or you can use the train or bus and the same applies to Venice which us about 90 minutes drive.0 -
The lakeside roads are narrow and busy so to go to the North (Riva etc.) would take hours if starting from the South. If approaching from Innsbruk then more feasible. Most people stay in the southerly part as it is more accessible for Sirmeone and also for
trips to Verona or even Venice and Milan.0 -

The others who have replied have given you good suggestions.
I'm afraid we found Lake Garda hot, crowded, and far too infested with tourists. We stayed a couple of days and went away to see the real Italy. Perhaps we picked the wrong time and the wrong southern parts of the lake, but although we went back to Italy many times afterwards we were never tempted to go back to Lake Garda. There were just so many places we liked better than that.

As you seem to be going out of season (avoiding any school holidays) then it should be far more relaxed although never quiet.
We found top, Camping Al Porto, Torbole (several sites in the town), right on the lake. Riva Del Garda looked nice when we passed through travelling South on the West side of the lake (road is narrowish but buses and lorries were on it so no real problems for our outfit with care)
At the South, there are loads of options but OH would not stay on San Francesco - just too busy and crowded. With Camping Sirmione a couple of km away it was much better for us and again, right on the lake with excellent restaurant etc. Overall, Garda was the best area on our trip and we would go back (although obviously it's up to the individual)

The western side is nice (Toscalarno Moderno and the like) but the drive down the western shore from Riva is largely through tunnels roughly hewn into the mountain side. They are mainly dark and I found them a challenge in a car mainly due to a stream
of trucks in the opposite direction and difficulty in judging space available. Doable but difficult I'd say. If I was going with my van I'd go down the Eastern side and stay in the south - as mentioned also good for Verona / Venice.0 -
