It was the Citroen Xantia !!!

The deposit was £5, a bit steep as a a couple in low season would only pay £3 per night + EHU

I can remember that £5 deposit and I remember complaints in the En-Route about wealthier members booking multiple sites for the same days and simply foregoing the deposit on the ones they decided not to use..

    hence more no shows

Ok boys and girls, I have in front of me the site collection book for 1999 (the year we joined)

    The membership fee was £27.50

    and quote:

Club site fees vary per site and depends on the dates of each visit. On the following two pages we list each site... and the band fee... You will see that we highlight the main holiday periods Easter, spring bank, and the summer.

    So much for BB's claim!

    There were six bands A - F with pitch fees from £1 - £2, the adult fee went from £1.50 - £4.00, child from 50p to £1.20.

EHU was £2.20 from October to March, and £1.45 for the rest of the year.

I can confirm that Easter was two weeks around the BH and it was the peak rate.

Interestingly, according to the RPI,  inflation since 1999 is just under 58%.

Peak price for 2 adults with EHU would have been £11.45 from the above.  So with inflation that would be £18 this year.

So why are site fees so high now?

that's really very interesting, apart from you've just given me ideas for all my lessons next week using percentages multipliers, some research for the lessons are: the price of a litre of petrol was 61.9p which adjusts to 97.8p, the average weekly wage
was £384, which should be £606, however the average for 2015 is about £500

quite quaint though that you have kept the booklet, but not at all surprisingWink

Thanks, I'm taking that as a compliment! I only kept the first one as it was all new, and you never forget you first love do you? and you wouldn't throw away love letters?

You might be very surprised to know I have kept a record of every single caravan trip I have ever done, we bought our first caravan on the 9th September 1999 and the first year we did 2015 towing miles, which I know for a true blue motorhomer like yourself is nothing?

out of interest what's your yearly total?

I have all that info back to 1998 too. Since then 89566 miles towed. Last year 6412.

BTW A Dover Calais crossing  in 1986 cost me £151        todays value £399.12 which is about twice the going rate for now.

so it is not just the club who's prices are higher than they should be.

You'll be pleased to know you will feature in the homework given out next week -
In 1986 David paid £151 for the Dover to Calais crossing, find out the inflation index multiplier for 1986 to work out what the cost would be today, and then compare it to the today's actual cost as a percentage increase.

Absolute rip off this year we are on Tewksbury Abbey site at the moment £29.44 per night. looking at other sites the price rise is an average of 25% over last year. WHY ?? its March for Gods sake. We are heading down to Cornwall
and booked ont private sites far better than this for £10 per night less. I will certainly have to think twice before rejoining The Caravan Club.

I thought that looked a bit high, bill, so I did a bit of looking up.

Tewkesbury Abbet site ( only opened yesterday for the year I believe) - pitch fee £9.70 + 2 adults @ £7.50 = £24.70 a night (too high for us, I must admit)  and children are £1 a night. So how did you arrive at £29.44?

Wink. Use left and right arrows to navigate.

yes something must attract BB to the club.

I retract my statement about you not using club sites, but you don't use them in the 'proper manner' Wink
