Tow bar plugs and sockets

I'm new to caravanning, I was wondering what the benefits are of using two tow bar sockets as opposed to one. My vehicle has one 7 pin socket and the caravan I will be collecting has two plugs. Do I  need to have an extra socket fitted to the car to accommodate
both plugs on the caravan?
