Why have an awning?
When we started caravanning almost 20 years ago (after many years in tents) we did what most caravanners did.....we bought an awning.
But after a while, we went further out of season and for short breaks and started to leave the awning behind. The relief of not having to struggle with an awning, worry about whether it would rain on packing up day, spend our last day packing the thing away, was immense......it all became so much better.
Nowadays we would not dream of having one, but we still see people struggle with them, like some strange, masochistic ritual.
Just this week, we watched a single guy spend hours putting one up. He spent time each day re-pegging it. Then, after a 3 night stay, another couple of hours packing it up. He was on his own, no dog, no visitors........did he put himself through this purely out of habit??
We see couples with great big twin axles who still put up a great big marquis next to it.
Why do people bother???? One of the great advantages of moving from a tent to a caravan was not having to put up a tent........but some people still do it?
