Ile de Re

We are hoping to go to the Il de Re for the first time at the beg of Sept if the weather is still warm. Any hints, tips or recommendations gratefully received. After that we will travel down the west of France and perhaps then into Spain. Is it easy to cross
into Spain from St Jean de Luz? Would like to travel around the Rioja/Naverra area, have never been to Spain in our motorhome so another first!   Here's hoping!
