Are there any easy alternatives to an awning ?

OK, new to caravanning, second week away starts tomorrow and I'm already wondering why I bothered to accept the awning I was given .....
Are they designed to be as bloody difficult as possible to put up or is that just a 'fringe benefit' the designers threw in for a laugh !
Mine is only a porch awning (thankfully) ...... if it was a full sized one it'd be listed on eBay by now !
Even at 6'4" tall I still need steps to thread it into the channel on my German-built caravan hence its got me thinking that there must be a better alternative somewhere .....
So .... does anyone know what it is ?? Aside from the obvious (leave it in the shed and go without it !)
