Caravan number plate
Hello everyone,
Caravan newbies here- just bought a swift sprite major 6 . How do we go about getting a number plate for the caravan? Literally have no idea how to go about this or the cost etc.
Any help/guidance would be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

You buy a rear number plate for your car which entails proving ownership of the car, your ID and address. See the DVLA website. Then you fix the plate to the caravan.

You can go to Halfords (£15.99) or the like with the V5 and driving licence. Or a cheaper option is
Amazon (£6.82). I used Amazon and happy with product. Just make sure that they are road legal (including BS Standards and Post Code) and not show plates.0 -
brilliant,thanks for your help

Many years ago I got a new Company car and forgot to change the caravan plate. Travelled over Europe for over two weeks and didn't realise until we got home!

Go to any Motor Factors with your driving licence and car logbook (V5) and they will make one for you. Simple.
If they don't ask for any documents the chances are the plates are not legal. All motor factors and producers of number plates have to keep records for the DVLA of all plates they make.

just a tip but if you are getting a new car ask them to make a second plate up free of charge as part of te deal, saves time and money

When you stick it on make sure you put the adhesive strips in the correct place, if the surface is not totally flat. Ours has indentations and when the dealer fitted it they obviously did not check. When we changed our car after 6 months and I pulled it
off, it hardly took any pulling as most of the sticky was over the indent. It is lucky it was not much longer or I think it would have fallen off.0 -
We have a potential problem. We've just changed the car, but can't change the numberplate on the caravan until the new V5 comes. Does anyone know if you can get a new numberplate by presenting the VC5/2 portion of the logbook - the little slip that you fill in with the new keepers details?

Take the one off the rear of your car and put it on the caravan for the journey, until you can get one.
Having a cherished number bought before the nonsense introduced over the years, I had a set of number plates from the first car I had them on, fitted show plates to that car, as it was registered before the nonsense was introduced and have an original plate
as a spare. The caravan dealer made up a number plate on collection. It was ordered at the NEC and we were asked the registration to put on the order.
As long as APNR can read the digits, I don't really understand what the fuss is about.

Danwestgate, when you get your new number plate it might be slightly curved. Don't just rely on the sticky pads, I went to my caravan in storge and found the number plate on the ground at the back of the van. It had pulled itself off. Put a couple of scews
in.0 -
It is illegal to remove the number plate on the car and place it on the rear of the 'van.

I dont think that's quite correct. Have a look at paragraph 5(2) of the Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 you can find it here. In practice it would be a challenge to swap the plates without causing damage. Also it would attract the attention of any passing police patrol if there were no plates on the back of the towing vehicle.

The use of number plate holders makes removing easy. I have plate holders on my trailer, bike rack and a previous car, as fitted with those bits of kit, just for ease of moving number plates; and enabling friends and neighbours to borrow the various items
as required. At Easter on a site where we were, there were 2 consists doing just that. 1 was a campervan towing a caravan, the other a 4x4 towing a caravan. The 4x4 had number plate holders as it was a Japanese import, the had velcro pads on vehicle and caravan.

Write your comments here...MM, my previous caravan was as you describe, the pads caused no problems and stayed on for years. My new number plate had 5 pads, dry surfaces and grease free, but a slight curve which would not flatten out. It only took a couple of weeks before it fell off, thankfully not when being towed, hence the screws. Worth letting others know.

I stand corrected, but I always understood yhat the law requires number plates on both the vehicle snd trailer.

Law requires a plate at the front & another at the back of the whole thing ...... common sense though tells you to put a plate on the back of the car for when the big wobbly box is not being towed.
