In our local flea pit rather grandly called The Alhambra, we got the Pathe News, a cartoon, the B movie and then the main film. That was value for money. The usherette with her torch was a bit of nuisance when I was a teenager

I remember it well. I also remember the usherettes showing you to your seat with a torch. That cinema building in Worthing facing the sea front is still there. It's outside appearance hasn't changed since I was a child!
I love the look of the old cinema buildings; it’s a pity so many have been demolished.
Our nearest town had four cinemas at one time, now it has none, just a multiplex about 8 miles away.

..and the Fire Curtain during the ice cream or coconut ice interval. And ashtrays on the seat backs.
In the late '50's and the early 60's my school pal's father owned (yes owned) the Duke of York cinema in Brighton (a bit of a flea pit). The usherettes were well trained and always showed us to seats either side of girls - much to the girls' surprise in a mostly empty auditorium. I can't remember it being very productive though. There were double 'snogging seats' in the expensive balcony......or so my pal told me

I remember playing for my school on some rough pitches. Some didn't have much in the way of grass and were laid on all sorts of ground. Sliding tackles could take acres of skin off your knees.
One of the away pitches (Whitehawk) sloped so much that when I took a corner all I could see was the top 2 feet of the goal post and the crossbar...
and another (Clayton) where we had to clear the sheep doo-dah before playing.

I remember there being the cheapest seats in the stalls, then there was the balcony and then the most expensive in the dress circle.

Good Heavens, Malcolm, how long ago was that?
And, no, but I do remember the "rag and bone man" coming round in a horse drawn cart. There were cars etc on the roads though, even in Lancashire!

Write your comments here...Apparently, when the motor car was first introduced, it was required that someone should walk in front with a red flag to warn other road users that there was a motor car coming! The maximum speed then was about 10 mph!

I remember when we were inspecting houses for slum clearance we had a couple of abbreviations which we used to use. D&V was for dirty and verminous, and SOS was for stove on suspicion ie. not quite D&V but treat anyway. SFF was for stone flagged floor.
