Crossing from Portmouth to Bilbao

Could anyone please give their views on the crossing from portmouth to bilbao compared to the trawl through france. We are going next April, how rough is the crossing? we just want to do one way down and travel up to calais back as places to go, Would it
be easier to go to another port down we are heading for Salou Spain.
