Hail Storm Damage

When touring on the continent the likelyhood of severe storms is greater. Friends of mine suffered significant damage to the roof of their caravan following an intense hail storm with hail stones much larger than the norm.

Static vans on some continental sites seem to guard against this by having large raised canvas sections over the roof.

Is thas a problem others have found and are there any preventative measures suggested by individuals or manufacturers.
