Pompeii and Herculaneum
Has anyone any recommendations for sites near to Pompeii or Herculaneum and how accessable are the ruins (and how crowded). I use a mobility scooter for distances of more than a few hundred metres and would be interested in any information that would help
us decide whether to visit these great sounding places, also info on what's the motorhome parking like. Thanks

What a pity Motorhomer from Dorset did not get any replies. My husband and I want to visit Pompei and Herculaneum in September 2018. Can anyone help us now with sites, etc?

There are some answers to your question further down the newer threads if you go back a page or two. Have a look at this one for starters.
Many of the old posts have had the replies Deleted User as part of the upgrade to the forum just over a year ago. Not sure why they didn't delete the title threads as well? So it is possible Meecee got answers which have since been Deleted User.

We have been to both ruins and Herculenium is better preserved but Pompei is more accessible, being quite close to the station. Pompei is a large site. Both get very crowded at most times of the year and at all times of the day. Better when it’s cold and wet but not much fun. It was wet and miserable when we visited H and too hot when we visited P so overall not that exciting.
Can’t comment on the camping sites but as Sorrento lends itself to a hotel based holiday we would never consider it by Motorhome. Maybe we just aren’t adventurous but it can get unbearably hot in that area plus sites will be small and crowded.
If you stay near Sorrento the train is simple to both sites. You can also get ferries across to Capri and to the Amalfi coast resorts such as Positano and Amalfi. The coast road is best avoided unless you have nerves of steel.
Capri is a beautiful island before the tourists arrive in hordes at 10 am. We flew to Naples, ferry to Capri for a few days, ferry to Sorrento for a few days then you can get back to Naples by train or airport bus.

I've also been to both places but not by MH. Herculenium was very hot when I went at the beginning of June, as its more enclosed than Pompeii it felt much more humid. Pompeii is much more open and spread out but benefited from a breeze so I didn't find it too bad. Both sites were visited in the same week.
There used to be someone called Kontikikid who used to post on here, on his blog he mentions a site just outside of Pompeii that he stayed at, sorry but I don't have any idea about a site near Herculenium.
As far as I remember MH and caravans are not allowed on the coast road, as we stayed in Maiori we benefited from using the excellent coastal buses. As well as the places Hitchglitch mentioned a visit to Ravello is also a must, but not by MH.

This is Russell's new website here, lots has been carried across from the old website but Kathleen will have to search through to see if the info she requires on that area is still there.

I can't remember what replies or not I received to my post, although I think points made above were mentioned either on here or through other research so we decided against. However some years ago our owners' club organised a rally staying very near Pompeii so presumably taking a motorhome to the area is possible.
