St. Gotthard's Pass - adivce on this route please

I'm planning a trip to Italy later this month. We have a Defender 110 300TDi and TEC Travel King 510 on tow.
I'd like to cross the Saint Gotthard's Pass to enjoy the experience and the views, whilst avoiding the tunnel.
Anyone done that route that could offer advice dealing with the challenges of driving in that region? Your comments or story will be appreciated.
